What is radical prostatectomy?

This operation is for men with prostate cancer.This is an operation which can cure prostate cancer.

Is this surgery for all men with prostate cancer?

No.This surgery is for men of relatively young age say less than 70 years who are expected to live for at least 10-15years.

How is this Surgery done?

This operation can be done by robot assisted, laparoscopic or open method.Robot assisted ensures quick recovery and short hospital stay .The aim of, trying to cure cancer is achieved more or less equally in all approaches.

Will I get urine leak following this operation?

Urine leak or urinary incontinence is very likely to occur immediately after the operation.The leak gets better with pelvic floor exercise and within few weeks the urine leak gets lot better.

How long do I need to stay in the hospital?

Usually 3 to 5 days depending upon the approach.

Do I need to have a tube (catheter) in my urine passage?

Yes.Catheter stays for 2 to 3 weeks.

How will I know my cancer is cured?

Few weeks after the operation PSA blood test will be done and that will give an idea.Prostate removed will also be looked by the pathologist and that will give an indication if further treatment is required or not.
